Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is positive behaviour support?
An evidence-based approach that looks at the reasons behind a behaviour and builds strategies to improve the person’s quality of life. It focuses on skills, environment and support, never punishment.
Who is behaviour support for?
NDIS participants of any age whose behaviour affects their safety, wellbeing or opportunities, and anyone with restrictive practices in place. It also supports the families and workers around them.
What funding do I need?
Behaviour support is usually funded from Improved Relationships in the Capacity Building budget. Support coordination has its own Support Coordination budget.
What if my plan does not include behaviour support funding?
Get in touch anyway. We can talk through the options, including asking the NDIA to vary or reassess the plan, and your support coordinator or LAC can help with the evidence.
How long does a behaviour support plan take?
Where restrictive practices are used, the NDIS Commission requires an interim plan within one month of engagement and a comprehensive plan within six months. We aim to complete plans well within that time, with timely access to the person, their supports and records.
What are restrictive practices, and do you work with them?
Restrictive practices limit a person’s rights or freedom of movement. The regulated practices are seclusion and chemical, mechanical, physical and environmental restraint. We identify any in use, include them in the behaviour support plan and work towards reducing and eliminating them.
How is behaviour support different from counselling?
Behaviour support looks at the person’s environment, routines and support team, and produces a written plan everyone follows. Counselling works one to one with the person on their thoughts and feelings.
Who can make a referral, and what does it cost?
Anyone can refer, with the participant’s consent. Services are charged within the NDIS pricing arrangements, and NDIA managed, plan managed and self managed participants are all welcome.
Do you offer telehealth, and where do you work?
Yes. We work in person across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and surrounds and the Tweed, with the rest of Queensland by arrangement. Telehealth is available where it suits the person and the task.
